John Francis in Akumal
shortly before his Commando-conversion.
I was born long ago and far away in the northern colonies ... St.Marys, Ontario, Canada to be exact, and still live nearby in Stratford, the Festival City. Wendy & I had two sons. Matt is now a golf pro and our pride and joy. We lost our Steve in 1994 in a car crash when a truck lost control and crushed our van. We were on our way to a volleyball tournament. Steve was 18 and a wonderful kid. Ask me about him sometime and I'll go on for hours. 8)
We had our own flooded limestone quarry in St.Marys which had become a huge swimming pool by the time I arrived on the scene, so I grew up taking quarries for granted. We also had a nice little river on which I played Huck Finn almost from the time I could walk. Divers always interested me. We used to see a lot of them scooting under us as we swam at our quarry, and in my teen years I helped out on the boats a few times on body recoveries in a nearby conservation lake. I just never got around to doing anything about diving for myself until the mid-90's in Cancun, Mexico. Since then I've tried most flavours of diving ... Great Lakes, wrecks, caverns, ocean reefs, wall dives, drift dives, night dives, and of course, quarries. I love it.
I guess one of my favourite parts of diving is travelling and meeting new folks. The rec.scuba newsgroup has been a great source of information and introductions. That's how I came to meet Luann and Mike at Gilboa and all the folks I've dived with at Dutch Springs as well.
Just recently I started diving a backplate and wing. Even got the 7' hose happening. I like this setup much better than the Stab jacket. Now I just gotta figger out where the pockets are. Seriously, I like the stuff that DIR is teaching, or preaching, depending on your point of view. I'm not certain I'll ever fully adopt it, but I suspect I'll always stick pretty close to their rules of order, or is that engagement? 8)
So that's me in a nutshell. If you ever see a big ole bald Canuck wandering around gabbing to strangers, it may be me. Introduce yourself. Here's a little more stuff about us.
